The Human Resources Generalist works closely with the Director, Human Resources, Africa in managing all Human Resources operational activities for Opportunity’s employees across Africa and India, including recruitment and onboarding, leave management, payroll, and benefits administration.
RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
General Operations
- Act as an administrator of the Africa payroll and global HRIS systems, including maintaining employee data to ensure accurate records and reporting.
- Compile and publish monthly, quarterly, and year-end HR reports such as headcount and turnover for Opportunity’s employees in Africa and India.
Administration
- Support full-cycle recruitment of staff-level positions based in Africa, including sourcing, selecting, proactively managing the interview process, and guiding managers on employment offers.
- Manage the onboarding process to ensure a seamless experience for new hires.
- Prepare and process payrolls for all Opportunity’s businesses across Africa, including the filing of necessary payroll taxes.
- Provide all relevant employee information and changes to professional employer organization (PEO) in a timely manner to facilitate the employment of local hires.
- Ensure that all elements of employee records and benefits files are kept up to date.
- Maintain employee records and ensure that job descriptions remain up to date.
- Manage benefit vendor relationships and negotiate benefit plans across all countries in Africa.
- Serve as a key Human Resources contact for the Africa region, including handling employment-related inquiries from applicants, employees, and supervisors, referring complex and/or sensitive matters to the Director, Human Resources, Africa.
- Ensure that the business complies with all HR-related internal policies, local government labor laws, and reporting requirements.
- Consult with the Director, Human Resources, Africa, when policy gaps exist and recommend ways to close any gaps.
- Participate as needed in investigations when employee complaints or concerns are brought forth to the business.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or relevant field; HR professional certification is a plus.
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive HR experience with a proven record of outstanding achievement.
- Familiarity with administering HR practices and policies within a global organization is desirable.
- Knowledge of employment laws and practices across Opportunity’s countries of operations in Africa (DRC, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia).
- Ability to work in a matrix environment, responding to the needs of different teams, and an understanding of cross-cultural contexts.
- Strong verbal, written, analytical, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
- Able to adjust and redirect attention to managing multiple projects and priorities while adhering to deadlines.
- Excellent computer skills in a Microsoft Office environment. Must include Word and Excel.
- Demonstrated skills in database management and record keeping.
- Evidence of the practice of a high level of confidentiality.

LANGUAGE SKILLS
- Written and verbal fluency in English required, fluency in French desirable. Must be able to attend & fully participate in meetings conducted in English.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to travel internationally on occasion – most travel within Africa region.
