The Tailoring, Fashion, and Design program at the ADP Impact Hub in Gayaza, Kampala, provides hands-on training to aspiring fashion entrepreneurs.
Job Summary: We are seeking a skilled tailoring instructor to teach courses in tailoring and fashion design. The ideal candidate will have technical expertise and a strong commitment to teaching. They will deliver structured lessons, guide students in practical skills, and ensure that the curriculum aligns with the standards of the Directorate of Industrial Training (DIT).
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Instruction and Training
- Develop and deliver a comprehensive tailoring curriculum, including basic and advanced sewing techniques.
- Stay updated with trends, techniques, and innovations in the tailoring and garment-cutting industry, integrating relevant information into the curriculum.
- Provide hands-on training in pattern making, garment construction, alterations, and other related skills.
- Prepare students for DIT examinations and ensure all qualified students are registered for exams.
- Assist students in creating high-quality, marketable products that meet local and regional market demands.
- Teach entrepreneurial skills tailored to the sewing industry, including pricing, marketing, and business management.
Administrative Coordination
- Prepare the program budget and ensure that learning materials are procured and made available.
- Oversee the daily operations of the tailoring program, including scheduling classes, managing resources, and maintaining accurate attendance records.
- Prepare and submit monthly progress and financial reports.
Inventory and Asset Control
- Ensure that all training equipment is adequately maintained and in good working condition.
- Report any equipment problems to be fixed promptly.
- Maintain accurate records of all clothing items, including quantity, descriptions, and price lists.
- Ensure clothing items are neatly organized, labeled, and stored.
- Manage the distribution of clothing items to designated locations or individuals.
- Balance sales and cash at the end of each working day.
Sales and Marketing
- Assist in developing marketing campaigns to promote clothing products through various channels, including social media, print, radio, and local trade shows and events.
- Understand what items appeal to most customers.
- Promote the program and recruit students.
Partnerships
- Build relationships with local sector players, including the district, private sector, associations, educational institutions, and NGOs, to raise awareness of the Enterprise’s work, stay informed about local initiatives, and identify opportunities for collaboration.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Demonstrates high integrity, professionalism, and ethical conduct in all aspects of work. Strong commitment to accountability, transparency, and responsibility in delivering quality work and managing resources
- Level III – DIT Certification in Tailoring, Fashion, and Design or equivalent certification
- Minimum of 3 years of teaching or industry experience in tailoring and fashion design.
- Strong knowledge of garment construction, pattern drafting, and fabric manipulation.
- Experience with industrial and domestic sewing machines.
- Ability to develop and implement a structured curriculum.
- Passion for teaching and empowering women and girls.
- Strong communication and mentorship skills.
- Ability to manage class projects and track student progress.
- Experience in entrepreneurship or small-scale fashion production is a plus.
