Job Summary: Overall management of the finishing department i.e. Labels (Paper, Self-Adhesive, BOPP, PVC, PET) and flexible packaging (Laminates, LD Film, Soap Wrapper, Pouching). He/she will be responsible for material, human resource and planning for the department.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Oversee the Finishing Process including slitting, cutting, rewinding, laminating, and packaging.
- Quality Control: Perform regular inspections of the printed materials during the finishing process to ensure they meet the required quality standards (e.g., color accuracy, registration, print defects).
- Equipment Management and Maintenance: Oversee the proper operation and maintenance of all finishing equipment, such as slitting machines, rewinders, laminators, and curing systems and conduct regular checks and preventive maintenance on machines to minimize breakdowns and ensure smooth operation.
- Production Planning and Coordination: Coordinate with the production team to schedule and prioritize finishing tasks based on deadlines and customer requirements.
- Team Supervision and Training: Lead, train and supervise the finishing team, including operators and technicians.
- Problem Solving: Identify and resolve any issues that may arise during the finishing process (e.g., machine malfunctions, quality defects, material issues).
- Safety Compliance: Ensure that all finishing operations are carried out in compliance with safety regulations and company policies and conduct regular safety training sessions for the team and enforce safety protocols in the finishing department.
- Record Keeping and Reporting: Maintain detailed records of production runs, machine performance, and quality control checks. Keep track of raw materials, consumables, and finished goods inventory, ensuring adequate stock levels.
- Continuous Improvement: Stay updated on industry trends, technologies, and best practices to maintain high-quality standards.
- Collaboration with Other Departments: Work closely with the printing, quality control, and logistics teams to ensure the entire production process runs smoothly.
- Inventory Management: Monitor and manage the stock of raw materials, such as films, laminates, and adhesives, used in the finishing process. Ensure efficient use of materials to minimize waste and optimize production costs.
- Compliance with Environmental Standards: Ensure that the finishing process complies with environmental regulations, such as waste management, chemical disposal, and air quality standards.
Key Performance Indicators:
- Production Efficiency – Efficiency of the finishing equipment versus the process.
- Quality Control (Defect Rate) – Percentage of finished products that meet quality standards without defects.
- Downtime (Unplanned Downtime) – Time the finishing equipment is not operational due to mechanical failure or other issues.
- Cycle Time – The time it takes to complete one cycle of finishing (e.g., slitting, rewinding, laminating, etc.).
- Material Utilization (Yield) – The percentage of material used effectively in the production process versus waste material.
- On-Time Delivery (OTD) – The percentage of orders that are completed and delivered on time to the customer.
- Safety Incidents – The number of safety incidents or accidents that occur during the finishing process.
- Rework Percentage – The percentage of the finished products that require rework due to defects or errors.
- Employee Productivity – Measures the output per employee in the finishing department.
- Customer Satisfaction – Measures how satisfied customers are with the finished products and timely delivery.
- Waste Reduction (Scrap Rate) – The percentage of materials discarded or wasted during the finishing process.
- Inventory Turnover (Material Stock Efficiency) – Measures how efficiently raw materials and consumables are being utilized and stocked in the finishing department.
- Energy Consumption – Measures the energy used during the finishing process.
- Employee Turnover Rate – The rate at which employees leave and are replaced in the finishing department.
- Cost per Unit (Cost Efficiency) – Measures the cost of producing each unit during the finishing process.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Residency status: Preferably Ugandan National or holder of Certificate of Residence, but open to Expatriates
- Qualification: Minimum High School Certificate
- Linguistic skills: Fluent in English (Spoken & Written)
- Experience: At least five (5) years’ experience as a supervisor in finishing section in a related industry
- Age: Between 35-40 years.
Key Skills:
- Familiarity with the Gravure printing process.
- Ability to identify defects or inconsistencies in printed materials (e.g., color shifts, registration errors, or material defects).
- Ensuring that the final product meets quality standards and customer requirements.
- Familiarity with testing methods to ensure print quality and alignment.
- Ability to optimize production speed, reduce waste, improve cycle times and quality without compromising on precision.
- Leading, supervising and training a team while guiding them on best practices.
- Ensuring all finishing tasks (such as cutting, laminating, and slitting) are done with high precision and ensuring that the final printed material is free of defects and ready for shipment.
- Identifying and mitigating potential risks in the finishing process.
- Managing production schedules to ensure timely delivery of finished products.
- Communication – Providing regular updates to upper management on production status, issues, and improvements and collaborating with other departments (e.g., printing, quality control, logistics) to ensure smooth workflow and meeting deadlines.
