Yalelo (U) Limited is a tilapia fish farm that was established in Uganda in 2019. The farm is located in Butembe, Buikwe district on the shores of Lake Victoria. First Wave Group owns and operates Yalelo Zambia, a pioneer of Aquaculture founded in 2011 that has grown quickly to become the leading fish farm in Zambia and among the largest aquaculture farms in Africa.
Job Summary: The Fish Health Technician monitors fish health throughout the production chain by collecting samples, examining health status, and reporting data. The incumbent monitors and provides guidance on biosecurity measures implemented at the YU production site. Additionally, the incumbent conducts routine quality assessments of harvested fish. This role is critical for maintaining fish health, optimizing production outcomes, and upholding biosecurity and quality standards.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Collect and examine fish samples routinely at every growth stage to check out for disease.
- Follow up on fish health status throughout the production chain, identifying and responding to emerging health issues.
- Carry out life cycle studies of the emerging pathogens on the farm and give advice on how to break these life cycles.
- Conduct training sessions and provide guidance on fish health and biosecurity practices as needed.
- Conduct quality assessments of harvested fish.
- Data management, including recording and reporting of fish health findings.
- Provide support for research activities as stipulated by the ongoing research project.
- Perform routine housekeeping of the laboratory to ensure a clean and organized work environment.
- Execute any other duties assigned by the Laboratory Team Lead to support the team’s goals.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Fisheries and Aquaculture, Veterinary Medicine, or a related field.
- At least two years of experience in aquaculture and fish health management.
- Strong understanding of fish diseases, diagnostics, and biosecurity measures.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite.
- Organised, detail-oriented, collaborative, and committed to HSE standards
