Role Overview:

The Senior Accountant will ensure compliance with internal controls, adherence to financial policies and procedures, and proper record-keeping for transactions related to the organization’s revenues, receivables, payables, payroll, and tax filings.

Key Responsibilities:

Income Accounting, Reconciliations, and Receivables:

  • Verify student enrolment and ensure accuracy of records.
  • Ensure timely generation of invoices and receipts.
  • Reconcile bank statements, attendance registers, and accounting systems.
  • Generate and distribute accurate enrolment and debtors lists.

Payables and Payroll:

  • Establish and monitor a payment tracking system.
  • Ensure timely VAT filings and resolve URA queries.
  • Reconcile payables accounts monthly.
  • Ensure accurate payroll processing and timely submission to the Board.

Cash and Bank:

  • Oversee timely preparation of bank reconciliation statements.
  • Verify petty cash purchases and ensure compliance with finance policies.

Fixed Assets:

  • Maintain and update the fixed assets register.
  • Update depreciation expenses monthly and ensure proper tagging and insurance of assets.

Budgeting and Reporting:

  • Assist in budget preparation and data collection.
  • Generate periodic financial reports and assist with statutory audits.
  • Ensure timely filing of tax returns.

Management:

  • Manage and mentor a small accounting team.
  • Provide value-adding financial analysis.
  • Address risks raised by internal and external audits.

Qualifications & Work Experience:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • Certifications: CPA(U) and/or ACCA certification.
  • Experience:
    • 5+ years in a senior accounting position, with experience managing a team.
    • Experience in preparing financial statements, reconciliations, and audit preparation.
    • Experience in the education sector is an added advantage.

Skills:

  • High proficiency in MS Excel and MS Word.
  • Proficient in ERP systems or accounting software.
  • Strong planning, organizing, and coordinating skills.
  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and detail-oriented mindset.
  • Ability to work independently and under pressure.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team effectively.
