Job Summary

The Field Laboratory Technician will perform biomarker-related procedures at the household/team level, including phlebotomy, conducting rapid blood tests, processing and shipping specimens, waste management, and maintaining laboratory equipment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Attend and complete technical trainings outlined in UPHIA Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Conduct phlebotomy and other biomarker tests and procedures as required.
  • Perform internal quality control (QC) procedures and maintain QC logs accurately.
  • Ensure strict confidentiality of participant test results.
  • Handle and appropriately store biological samples until shipment.
  • Adhere to survey SOPs and universal safety precautions.
  • Safely manage and dispose of biohazardous materials.
  • Maintain and operate field lab equipment efficiently.
  • Safeguard and ensure proper use of tablet computers during the program.
  • Identify and document survey non-conformities and implement corrective actions.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisors.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Diploma or higher in Laboratory Technology.
  • Valid Annual Practitioner’s License.
  • Fluency in English and at least one local language relevant to the assigned area.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Experience with large-scale population surveys (e.g., UPHIA, DHS) within the last seven years.
  • Certificates in Good Clinical Practice (GCP), Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP), and Human Research Participant Protection.

  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills; a team player.
  • Ability to work continuously throughout the contract period.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Adaptable to challenging field conditions.
  • Availability for training starting January 2025.
  • Ready to begin work in March 2025.

Additional Information

Work Hours: 8 hours daily
Experience Required: Minimum 24 months in a related role
Education Level: Diploma or higher
