Job Summary
The Satellite Laboratory Technologist will oversee the processing, management, and storage of blood samples for the Uganda Population-based HIV Impact Assessment (UPHIA) Survey. Key tasks include plasma separation, aliquoting, HIV rapid testing external quality assurance (EQA), preparation of Dried Blood Spots (DBS), and shipping samples to central laboratories.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate in all required technical trainings as outlined by UPHIA SOPs.
- Accession and manage samples using the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
- Process blood samples, including plasma and DBS preparation, within specified timelines.
- Conduct CD4+ T-cell counts and repeat HIV rapid tests for EQA on field samples.
- Maintain proper storage conditions for DBS and plasma aliquots using LIMS.
- Generate and submit reports on sample processing and quality assurance activities.
- Pack and ship specimens adhering to ICAO/IATA guidelines.
- Implement laboratory safety practices and dispose of biohazard waste per regulations.
- Perform and document internal quality control procedures for survey samples.
- Replenish and manage field team supplies, adhering to FEFO stock management rules.
- Collaborate with key personnel, including the Lab Advisor and survey teams, to ensure smooth operations.
- Identify and address non-conforming events, implementing corrective actions as needed.
- Undertake other duties as assigned by supervisors.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Medical Laboratory Technology or Biomedical Sciences.
- Registered with the Allied Health Professional Council with a valid practicing license.
- Minimum of 2 years’ laboratory experience, including HIV testing and quality assurance.
- Practical experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) is an advantage.
- Experience with logistics and procurement management is preferred.
- Previous involvement in large population surveys (e.g., UPHIA, DHS) within the last 7 years is an asset.
- Valid certifications in Good Clinical Practice (GCP), Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP), and protection of human research participants.

- Strong organizational and analytical laboratory skills.
- Proficient interpersonal and communication skills in English and relevant local languages.
- Capability to manage tight deadlines and multiple assignments concurrently.
- Willingness to work non-standard hours to support 24-hour laboratory operations.
- Team-oriented and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency in computer applications, including MS Word, Excel, Internet, and Email.
- Commitment to adhering to medical research health ethics and laboratory standards.
Additional Information
Work Hours: 8 hours daily
Experience Required: Minimum 24 months
