Job Summary
Kijani Forestry seeks a skilled Database Administrator to oversee and manage our data systems, ensuring security, efficiency, and effective support for our agroforestry projects. Reporting to the Tech Lead, this role will focus on database design, data governance, project leadership, and integration to enhance our operational impact.
Key Responsibilities
Database Architecture Design
- Design and implement comprehensive database architectures tailored for agroforestry projects, encompassing data on land management, crop performance, environmental impact, and research.
Data Strategy and Governance
- Establish data governance policies to maintain data quality, consistency, and security.
- Develop and implement data management strategies aligned with organizational objectives.
Database Management
- Manage the configuration, deployment, and maintenance of database systems to ensure performance, reliability, and scalability.
Integration and Optimization
- Develop integration solutions for seamless data flow between databases and other agroforestry systems.
- Optimize database performance and data retrieval processes.
Project Leadership
- Lead database projects, including new database development, upgrades, and data migrations.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver projects on schedule and within budget.
Security and Compliance
- Implement data security protocols to safeguard sensitive data.
- Ensure compliance with data protection regulations and industry standards.
Support and Training
- Provide support and training to database administrators and IT staff to strengthen database management skills.
Data Analysis and Reporting
- Collaborate with data analysts to develop tools and reports that support data-driven decision-making.
Innovation and Research
- Stay updated on database technologies and explore new tools to improve our data capabilities in agroforestry.
Additional Responsibilities
- Performance Monitoring: Monitor and optimize database configurations for high availability.
- Backup and Recovery: Develop and test backup and recovery protocols.
- Documentation: Maintain thorough documentation of database structures and processes.
- Collaboration: Partner with agronomists and environmental scientists to provide data solutions that meet their needs.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or Software Engineering. A Master’s degree is an added advantage.
- Experience: Minimum of 3 years in software development and implementation.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in Python, JavaScript, or Java; experience with SQL and NoSQL databases; cloud platform experience (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud) and DevOps practices.
Preferred Skills
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Effective communication skills, especially in explaining technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- Strategic thinker with a proactive approach.
- Passion for environmental sustainability.
- Knowledge of GIS and remote sensing technologies is a plus.
