Job Overview:

The Communications and Digital Engagement Officer will provide technical leadership and coordinate all communications and digital engagement activities for the Citizens’ Action Against Corruption project. The role ensures brand presence and visibility, mainstreams media and social media relations, and ensures compliance with the project’s branding and communication plans.

About the Citizens’ Action Against Corruption Activity:

This USAID-supported project tackles corruption by empowering citizens to lead anti-corruption efforts and promote accountability. Corruption in Uganda is driven by citizen apathy, permissive social norms, and impunity. The project aims to strengthen both accountability systems and citizen action against corruption. The project operates across Kampala, Gulu, Kapchorwa, and Kumi offices.

Reports to:

Chief of Party (CoP), with matrix reporting to AAIU Communications Officer.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Media Relations:
    • Build relations with key media houses and personalities in collaboration with the CoP and USAID.
    • Coordinate media engagements, including press conferences, advocacy initiatives, and campaigns.
    • Conduct field visits with media, and monitor daily media mentions and trends related to the project.
  2. Digital Campaigns & Capacity Building:
    • Train targeted citizen groups and networks on digital campaigns related to anti-corruption.
    • Develop training manuals and reference materials for digital engagement by partners.
    • Conduct mentorship sessions for citizen groups on digital advocacy and campaigns.
  3. Community Mobilisation & Social Movement Building:
    • Support citizen structures and coalitions in documenting evidence of corruption to inform digital advocacy campaigns.
    • Facilitate digital engagement on corruption and public service accountability.
  4. Publications:
    • Support the timely publication of Citizen Chronicles on Corruption (C3) by gathering content, reviewing stories, and ensuring quality editing.
    • Train staff and contributors on writing and analyzing corruption stories.
  5. Anti-Corruption Campaign Rollout:
    • Draft and publish anti-corruption messages and slogans through various platforms.
    • Collaborate with the COP and Finance Manager to draft and disseminate press statements and media scripts.
    • Document activities related to the anti-corruption campaign.
  6. Corporate Branding:
    • Ensure the availability of diverse visibility materials in consultation with the USAID AOR and COP.
    • Monitor compliance with the project’s branding and communication plans.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Information Science, Journalism, Mass Communication, Media Studies, or Marketing. Postgraduate qualifications in multimedia or digital communication are an added advantage.

Experience:

  • At least 4 years of experience in a similar role in an NGO. Experience with USAID-supported projects is preferred.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong writing and editing skills with the ability to adapt for different audiences.
  • Creative thinking and content creation abilities.
  • Proficiency in graphics and image design software (e.g., Adobe, Photoshop).
  • Attention to detail and the ability to simplify complex social issues.
  • Photography and photo editing skills.
