The Hansen Leadership Institute (HLI) Program 2025 is now open for applications, offering a fully funded summer fellowship for both U.S. and international students. This program focuses on developing leadership skills, particularly in international cooperation, conflict resolution, and mediation. It provides hands-on training in leadership strategies, public speaking, and communication, aiming to foster a generation of global leaders committed to creating a peaceful world.

Program Benefits

The Fred J. Hansen Foundation covers the following costs for selected fellows:

  • International travel
  • Accommodation and meals
  • All programmatic expenses (including activities and materials)

Eligibility Criteria

For Non-U.S. Students:

  • Must be an upper-division undergraduate (at least two years of university/college education) or a graduate student with a focus on international relations, economic development, or related fields.
  • Age range: 20-25 years old at the start of the program.
  • Must demonstrate leadership experience outside the classroom (in community, country, or region).
  • Must provide proof of English proficiency (verified by an academic advisor or professor).
  • Must hold a valid international passport and a U.S. visa (if required) by the start of the program.
  • Preference is given to candidates who have not previously visited the U.S..

For U.S. Students:

  • Must have completed at least two years of college/university and be interested in international relations, diplomacy, economic development, or related fields.
  • Age range: 20-25 years old at the start of the program.
  • Must show leadership experience outside the classroom through community service or work with public service/NGOs.
  • Must provide a recommendation form from an organization where leadership has been demonstrated.

Application Deadlines

  • For International Students: January 10, 2025 (11:30 PM PST)
  • For U.S. Students: March 10, 2025 (11:30 PM PST)
