Job Overview:
Farm Radio International is looking for a talented UI Designer to drive the design and enhancement of the Uliza web application. This volunteer role involves creating intuitive, user-friendly designs that align with both user needs and business goals. The designer will work closely with the UX writer, researchers, developers, and the product manager to deliver seamless UI experiences for users of the Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) project.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Develop user interface designs for the Uliza web application, aligning with user needs and business objectives.
  • Create wireframes, mockups, and prototypes to illustrate design ideas and user interactions.
  • Translate complex ASR functionalities into visually appealing and intuitive UI components.
  • Conduct user research and usability testing to gather insights into user needs and behaviors.
  • Analyze feedback to refine design solutions and enhance user experience.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to ensure integration of design and technical functionality.
  • Develop and maintain design systems, including style guides and component libraries, for consistency.
  • Stay updated with UI design trends and best practices, especially for ASR and web applications.
  • Prepare detailed design specifications and assets for developers.
  • Document design decisions and maintain design-related documentation.

Project Mandate:
The project, running from September 2024 to August 2026, aims to enhance the accuracy and reliability of speech recognition for African languages. The UI Designer will contribute to revolutionizing user interaction with speech data via the Uliza application.

Key Deliverables:

  • UI Designs: High-fidelity mockups and prototypes of the web application’s UI elements.
  • Wireframes & User Flows: Low-fidelity wireframes and detailed user flows for task completion within the application.
  • Design Documentation: Design specifications, guidelines, and documentation of research findings.
  • Design System: A reusable design system including components, style guides, and patterns.
  • Usability Reports: Summaries of usability testing results with recommendations for improvements.

Qualifications:

  • Able to work effectively in English.
  • Proven experience as a UI Designer with a portfolio of web application designs.
  • Proficiency in design tools (e.g., Figma, Sketch).
  • Strong understanding of user-centered design principles and web application best practices.
  • Experience with usability testing and user research methodologies.
  • Strong intercultural communication skills.

Expenses:
FRI will cover transportation costs and provide monthly stipends for the volunteer assignment.

Work Hours: 8 hours per day
