Job Title: Medical Lab Technologist

Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) is an independently governed institute within the College of Health Sciences at Makerere University and has the mission “To strengthen health systems in Africa, with a strong emphasis on infectious diseases, through research and capacity development.” IDI has operations across Uganda as well as in a number of other African countries and has a staffing of over 1,000 managing multiple projects in research, clinical services, public health and training.
Job Summary: Provides sample processing and data entry support and mentoring capacity. Works in the Data Entry and Processing areas to ensure that the samples received, processed have the accompanying Lab requisitions entered in a timely manner. Performs testing in all areas assigned areas of the laboratory. Demonstrates skill and knowledge on all laboratory test systems. Follows Good Laboratory Practices and quality requirements of the Core Lab
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Technical
- Performs processing of laboratory samples according to current protocols, procedures and quality assurance requirements, including PBMC isolation.
- Performs freezer sample storage and retrieval according to current protocols.
- Performs reagent preparation and equipment maintenance according to training and assignment.
- Performs laboratory tests on all scheduled benches as assigned according to current protocols, procedures and quality assurance requirements.
- Demonstrates skill and knowledge on all laboratory testing systems.
- Maintains a high level of precision and accuracy for all work performed.
- Supports QI program by regular worksheet reviews, SOP reviews, performing daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual maintenance of laboratory equipment as required in a timely manner and provide input as required for updating laboratory procedures and procedure manual.
- Responds to technical and logistical problems encountered in the laboratory in a timely and appropriate manner.
- Provides input as required for updating laboratory procedures and procedure manuals.
- Prepares lab samples for shipment as needed.
- Meets or exceeds continuing education requirements for position.
Support
- Assist with implementation of new study protocols, new instrumentation, new methodology and training as needed.
- Assists with training and problems solving as needed.
Data Entry
- Performs data entry of requisitions, results and storage requirements using Oracle LIS and LDMS.
- Files laboratory source documents.
- Provides electronic transfer of data as needed.
Safety
- Follows all laboratory procedures including safety guidelines, the use of personal protective equipment and awareness of blood-borne pathogens
- Maintains a clean and safe work environment.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
Academic Qualification
- A degree in Medical Laboratory Technology/ Sciences or a Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology of four years of related Medical Laboratory Technology training
