Yalelo (U) Limited is a tilapia fish farm that was established in Uganda in 2019. The farm is located in Butembe, Buikwe district on the shores of Lake Victoria. Yalelo Uganda is a subsidiary of First Wave Group B.V; a Dutch company with a portfolio of aquaculture related assets in Africa. First Wave Group owns and operates Yalelo Zambia, a pioneer of Aquaculture founded in 2011 that has grown quickly to become the leading fish farm in Zambia and among the largest aquaculture farms in Africa.
Job Summary: Feed supervisor in charge of grow out hence works with other feed supervisors to have smooth operation of fish larval production leading to production of high-quality fingerings with proper growth and health. This position involves a lot of working in the field with feeders doing constant checks and balances for feed logistics and overseeing fish weaning to the right type of feed at the right time.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Quality and Quantity
Quality:
- Ensure proper feeding of fish with the right feed size based on fish size to ensure uniform growth of fish.
- Maintain water quality in fishponds via controlled feeding depending on fish response to reduce stress and maintain fish health in all the production cycles
Quantity:
- Ensure that good fish rearing practices are practiced in the hatchery to ensure over 85% survivals in each production stage.
- Ensure that feeders to achieve the required growth (above 4g) in less than 60 days of culture
- Controlling water quality parameters in ponds via proper instilling of proper feeding practices into the feeders
Communication and coordination
- Proper coordination with water quality and transfer teams to during stocking a day-to-day pond management
- Coordinate with the fry and transfer team to for stocking into PSR dispatches to the nursery cages respectively
- Work with the data clerks to ensure that the right data about fish movements is entered into Aquamanager in a timely manner
- Assist other departments in the hatchery as instructed by the team leader or Hatchery manager based on hatchery production requirements
- Work with the team lead to verify with engineering team that all rearing processes and equipment maintenance is implemented in time
Hardware
- Maintenance and management of all floaters going into ponds to be used by feeders
- Maintenance of feed mixing equipment
Continuous Improvement
- Maintain and improve standards in the hatchery in a labour and resource cost effective way
- Should be highly adaptable to changes in the SOP/s
- Develop and support the culture of continuous improvement of their team by identifying high performing team members and work with the team lead to develop and effectively utilise their abilities
- Conduct refresher trainings to old staff and update them on new processes as the hatchery management carries out continuous improvements
- Assist and participate in hatchery research and development by participating in preparation and carrying out of feeding trials
- Day to day feeding supervision ensuring proper fish rearing processes are implemented an ensuring completion all day today activities around the ponds
- Compliance to Environment, Health & Safety Department
- Ensure proper health and safety of their team member during operations minimising work-related injuries to zero during the fish transfer activities. This includes proper usage of floaters and movement around ponds.
- Inculcate Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) principles into the team members for sustainable operation of hatchery activities following the right SOPs
- Daily check that all SOPs (husbandry, maintenance and biosecurity) are implemented in day-to-day hatchery activities
Reporting
- Prepare daily pond feeding reports
- Maintain proper inventory of all consumables used by their team by coordinating with the stores department and informing the Feeding team lead when supplies need replenishment
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Degree in Fisheries & Aquaculture
- 1 year experience in a similar role is a plus .
- Knowledge in good feeding practices and proper fish handling skills, good at team management and pace setting
- Good and proven leadership skills
- Strong analytical and organisational skills
- Work experience in a fish hatchery setup
- Ability to swim
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both written and oral
- Self-motivated with confidence in own technical abilities, willingness, and ability to learn new techniques and find solutions to problems
- Ability to work with minimal or no supervision and work within a team to achieve its goals whilst maintaining a consistent high work standard
- Microsoft Word and Excel skills
- Good at mathematics and calculations
- Experience and knowledge of administering first aid is an addition but not a requirement
