Reports to : Amazing Grace Coordinator
Working Hours: 35 Hours per week

Hope Health Action (HHA) is a Christian NGO passionate about providing life-saving health and disability care to the world’s most vulnerable without any discrimination. Founded in 2007, HHA now operates in Haiti, South Sudan and Uganda (the latter two under the umbrella of HHA East Africa).
 
Primary purpose of the position: The Special Needs Teacher will be responsible for providing tailored educational programs and support to learners with disabilities and special educational needs. This role involves creating an inclusive learning environment, developing individualized education plans (IEPs), and working closely with parents, caregivers, and other professionals to ensure each learner’s educational and social development.
 
Key Duties and Responsibilities:   
Develop and Implement IEPs:

Assess learners’ abilities and needs.
Create and maintain individualized education plans (IEPs) for each learner.
Regularly review and update IEPs based on learners’ progress and needs.

Instruction and Classroom Management:

Deliver specialized instruction to learners with diverse needs, using various teaching methods and materials.
Adapt curriculum and teaching styles to accommodate different learning abilities.
Foster a positive, inclusive classroom environment that encourages learners’ engagement and participation.

 Collaboration:

Work closely with other teachers, and school staff to support learners’ educational and social needs.
Communicate regularly with parents and caregivers about learners’ progress and any concerns.
Participate in team meetings and professional development opportunities.

Assessment and Evaluation:

Conduct regular assessments to track learners’ academic, social, and emotional progress.
Use assessment data to inform instruction and make necessary adjustments to teaching strategies.

 Behavioural Support:

Implement and monitor behavioural management plans for learners with challenging behaviours.
Provide guidance and support to learners in developing appropriate social skills and behaviours.
Participating in community mobilization and sensitization activities aimed at increasing learners’ enrolment
Be part of the child protection structure in school that will promote safety & protection of children while in school by ensuring the school is free from all forms of child abuse and risk
Professionally carry out counselling and career guidance with his/ her learner to help learner understand the available career/ education pathways options for them

Documentation and Reporting:

Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of learners’ progress, IEPs, and any incidents.
Prepare reports for school administration, parents, and relevant authorities as needed.

Resource Management:

Develop and utilize teaching aids and resources that cater to the needs of learners with special needs.
Ensure the classroom environment is safe and conducive to learning.
Any other duties assigned to you by supervisor.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:  

Minimum of Grade III teaching certificate from a recognized teacher training school/College
Must have passed Math and English with at least credit six at O level.
Must be registered online with Ministry of Education & Sports
At least 1-year experience in primary school teaching.
The candidate must exhibit excellent team management skills and able to work in multi-ethnic environment.
Specialized training or certification in special needs education is preferred.
Experience working with children with special needs is highly desirable.
Strong understanding of various disabilities and the educational approaches that support them.
Patience, empathy, and a genuine passion for working with children with special needs.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
