Overview: At Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI), we conduct health research of national importance with regional and global impact. Our collaborative project, WORMVACS2.0, funded by Horizon Europe, focuses on developing pipelines for helminth vaccine development. We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Laboratory Technologist to contribute to this project by performing laboratory tests and reporting results.

Job Title: Laboratory Technologist
Grade: Laboratory Technologist
Reports To: Senior Research Officer

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

  • SOP Development: Write and review standard operating procedures (SOPs) in accordance with manufacturer guidelines.
  • Sample Processing: Receive, process, and analyze samples promptly according to SOPs and quality control/assurance requirements.
  • Reagent Preparation: Prepare reagents, chemicals, and culture media for laboratory use.
  • Quality Control: Perform Internal Quality Control and External Quality Assurance as per schedule.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Clean and disinfect equipment, track servicing requirements, and maintain equipment cleaning logs.
  • Temperature Monitoring: Monitor and record equipment and storage temperatures.
  • Training and Support: Demonstrate practical procedures to new staff and students, assist in capacity building.
  • Waste Management: Ensure proper waste segregation, management, and autoclaving before disposal.
  • Stock Management: Maintain accurate records of reagent stocks to prevent shortages or overstocking.
  • Equipment Monitoring: Report equipment malfunctions and manage equipment servicing.

Education / Qualifications / Training Required:

Essential:

  • BSc in Biomedical Laboratory Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, Biomedical Science, Biotechnology, Biochemistry (or equivalent).

Desirable:

  • Master’s degree in immunology and clinical microbiology (with bioinformatics experience), systems immunology, computational biology, or Data Science (majoring in Biomedical Science).
  • GCLP, GCP, and PHRP training.

Previous Work Experience Required:

Essential:

  • Experience in biomedical laboratory research adhering to GCLP standards.
  • Experience working in laboratory clinical trials.
  • Practical experience across major medical laboratory disciplines.
  • Knowledge of GCLP & IATA.
  • Experience interacting with different departments and managing teams.

Desirable:

  • Experience with external regulatory agencies.
  • Experience in a research environment.
  • Demonstrable experience in administration and resource management.

Technical Knowledge or Skills:

Essential:

  • Knowledge of GCP/GCLP or other regulatory environments.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations.
  • Ability to show initiative, solve problems, and make independent decisions.

Desirable:

  • Experience with automated laboratory assays like DNA Extraction, PCR, ELISA, Flow Cytometry, ELISPOT, Luminex.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to lead quality assurance programs.
