Job Summary:   In this role, you will be the HSSE champion for all Maersk Uganda operations, based in Kampala. You will lead the development and implementation of Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE) initiatives, ensuring our Ugandan  operations adhere to Maersk’s global and regional HSSE standards.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement HSSE strategy: This includes risk assessments, mitigation plans, and safety integration into new projects.
  • Ensure compliance: Lead efforts to comply with Ugandan regulations and Maersk’s HSSE standards across all operations.
  • Manage contractor safety: Ensure contractors have adequate HSSE policies and procedures and verify their compliance.
  • Foster safety culture: Conduct training, promote awareness, and implement programs to improve safety culture within the organization.
  • Investigate and report incidents: Investigate incidents, near misses, and unsafe practices, report them, and implement corrective and preventive actions.
  • Manage emergency preparedness: Develop and maintain robust emergency response plans for each facility.
  • Train and develop staff: Identify training needs, deliver training programs, and ensure staff and contractors are well-equipped in HSSE matters.
  • Manage HSSE documentation: Compile and manage annual HSSE action plans, maintain records, and track regulatory changes.
  • Manage environmental impact: Implement and maintain best practices for waste management and environmental impact mitigation.
  • Manage security and dangerous goods: Manage relationships with security agencies, oversee dangerous goods handling, and ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Manage equipment safety: Implement and maintain a program for regular equipment inspections to ensure safe operation.
  • Audit and improve HSSE performance: Conduct audits, review findings, and manage corrective actions to improve HSSE performance.
  • Manage integrated management system: Implement and audit the company’s integrated management system (ISO 9001, 14001, 45001).
  • Support sales team: Collaborate with the sales team to ensure safe and reliable product offerings for customers.
  • Engage with stakeholders: Engage with stakeholders and authorities to improve HSSE and establish collaborative partnerships.
  • Lead and coach: Coach and support operational and management teams in achieving HSSE compliance and best practices.
  • Stay informed: Maintain a good understanding of relevant local and international HSSE regulations and best practices.
  • Report internally: Compile and report HSSE data internally through established reporting tools.
  • Conduct client inspections: Conduct physical location inspections for potential clients to assess their HSSE practices.

 

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • Academic: Minimum of bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Environmental Science or equivalent qualifications
  • Experience: At least five years working in Hands on Safety and Security with experience in Warehousing, Logistics, or complex multi stakeholder projects.
  • Certification: NEBOSH Certificate / Diploma. Membership to professional bodies such as IOSH, IIRSM, etc.
  • Preferred Industry: Preference for a candidate with demonstrated experience in logistics and warehouse operations, FMCG, Manufacturing
  • Experience in implementation HSSE programs for Warehousing, risk assessment, emergency response, equipment inspection, site traffic management, incident investigation, and training.
  • Experience in set up of a new facility/ warehouse, or contract logistics project implementation experience
  • Experience in implementation and maintenance of ISO Management systems for Quality, Environment and Occupational Health and Safety. Knowledge of global environmental standards.
  • Good understanding of risk management principles and application of barriers and critical controls
  • Good organization and planning skills
  • Flexibility and willingness to travel across East Africa.
  • Good interpersonal, written and communication skills, and ability to work across different levels in the organization
  • Communication and collaboration. Keeping people informed, sharing knowledge, ideas and information openly within the organization.
  • Good knowledge of warehousing operations
