Zembo Motorcycles SMC Limited is leading the African transition to electric mobility. Based in Kampala, Uganda, we provide affordable (PayGo) electric two-wheelers to low-income motorcycle-taxi drivers, most known locally as “boda-boda ”drivers. We offer a battery swapping service to our clients, enabling to swap within minutes at any of our stations.

 

Job Summary:   As the Production and Quality leader, you’ll have the responsibility and autonomy to lead the production team and deliver the Zembo motorcycle experience to clients. Your objective is to enable Zembo to develop from a start-up producing a few hundred motorcycles to an industry leader producing thousands of motorcycles every year.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:   

  • The Motorcycle Production & Quality Coordinator plays a key role in ensuring a smooth, continuous and efficient manufacture of electric vehicles to the highest quality and consistency standards.
  • Supply and inventory: Coordinate orders and fabrication from local suppliers in time to ensure all Bill of Materials inventory are available to meet production schedule requirements
  • Assembly Oversight: Ensure that production schedules are met at cost, on time, at the required quality and safety levels.
  • Team Management: Manage a motivated, skilled, and efficient Team to achieve company goals and objectives.
  • Every member of the Production team takes responsibility for supporting the business needs above, which may require expanding responsibilities as needed, additional learning, and tackling new professional challenges beyond what is reflected in this Job Description.

Functional Areas & Responsibilities

  • Team Leadership: Lead, motivate, and supervise a team of assembly line technicians, providing guidance, training, and support to ensure optimal performance and productivity.
  • Production Planning: Collaborate with the production planning team to develop and implement production schedules, ensuring timely delivery of electric motorcycles while optimizing resource utilization.
  • Schedule achievement: Manage resources to achieve schedule in an efficient way.
  • Tools and Equipment: Ensure all equipment is available and functional to meet the scheduled needs in a safe and efficient way.
  • Inventory Management: Oversee inventory levels of components and materials required for motorcycle assembly, coordinating with the procurement team to ensure adequate supply while minimizing excess inventory and waste.

Health and Safety (HSES):

  • Safety: Manage PPE, hazardous materials, disciplines, and processes by setting standards, managing against the standards, and leading by example.
  • Housekeeping: Maintain a clean, safe, and orderly work environment.
  • Quality Assurance: Implement and enforce quality control procedures to ensure that all motorcycles meet or exceed company standards and customer expectations. Conduct regular inspections and audits to identify and address any quality issues promptly.
  • Process Improvement: Continuously evaluate assembly line processes and identify opportunities for improvement in operational efficiency (cost), quality & safety by reducing waste to streamline operations and enhance overall performance.
  • Communication: Foster open communication and collaboration across departments, providing regular updates to management on production progress, challenges, and opportunities for improvement
  • Team Management
  • Leadership: Provide leadership and direction for all members of the production team and coordinate the team’s efforts with other support areas.
  • Teamwork: Work cross functionally with different teams to achieve company goals.
  • Development: Identify development opportunities to grow individuals and support development plans through coaching/teaching, job rotation and application of company resources.
  • Performance Management: Use the company performance system to create alignment of expectations, mutual understanding of actual performance, and support means to improve performance.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • Degree in mechanical engineering, systems engineering, or equivalent
  • 3-5 years of experience in managing a production line or manufacturing team
  • Strong hands-on experience in fabrication, preferably with welding and machining

Knowledge, Skills & Competences

  • Capable of doing root cause analyses and corrective action
  • Be able to drive and see continuous improvement and waste elimination opportunities
  • Understanding and implementation of Lean Manufacturing principles
  • Creative thinker that can work under pressure
  • Understand basic business fundamentals & financials
  • Strong communication skills
