About Organisation:

Makerere University Walter Reed Project (MUWRP) is a non-profit biomedical research Organization, whose mission is to mitigate disease threats through quality research, healthcare and disease surveillance. MUWRP was established in 2002 by a Memorandum of Agreement between The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine, Inc. (HJF) and Makerere University (Mak) to undertake medical research to test HIV vaccines. Over the years, MUWRP’s portfolio has progressively expanded to include vaccine research for Ebola and Marburg viruses, surveillance of influenza and influenza- like viruses and other emerging infections in humans and animals; also epidemiological, basic and implementation research in HIV treatment, care and prevention programs in the Districts of Kayunga, Mukono, Buvuma and Buikwe.

 

Job Summary:  The Laboratory Technician will support HPV laboratory testing for the Cervical Cancer Screening program at the MUWRP facilities.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Actively participate in routine testing of laboratory samples.
  • Support and participate in the implementation of CASCADE project operations.
  • Support and actively participate in the implementation of laboratory quality management systems and the quality improvement activities.
  • Proficiently run the GeneXpert machine used in the diagnosis of HPV as per established SOPs.
  • Perform routine and periodic maintenance of laboratory equipment to ensure their continued functionality by SOPs and QA/QC guidelines.
  • Participate in the generation, review and maintenance of laboratory documents and records including internal laboratory quality and safety manuals, SOPs, quality control records, equipment preventive maintenance records and schedules.
  • Documenting i.e. filling MoH laboratory registers and CASCADE CRF’s.
  • Monitor/track and place orders for logistical requirements so that all laboratory supplies are on hand at times.
  • Participate in the collection of laboratory data, generate timely lab data reports, and ensure the collected data is properly analysed and utilized for continued delivery of quality lab services.
  • Organize and participate in trainings and continuing professional development sessions/ and CMEs to ensure continued professional growth.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • Diploma in biomedical laboratory technology or any related science laboratory field.
  • One year of  working experience
  • Training and Knowledge in Cervical Cancer screening using HPV and Gene Xpert will be an added advantage.
  • Physical Ability: The ability to travel within the work site and field stations.
