About the Company: The FAO Representation in Uganda provides technical assistance to the Government of Uganda to achieve sustainable food, nutrition, and income security through resilient, sustainable, and inclusive agrifood systems. The current project, UNJP/UGA/068/EC, funded by the European Union, aims to enhance the resilience and gender-responsiveness of food production and livelihood systems in Karamoja.

Job Description:

  • Organizational Setting:
    • Support the FAO project “Improving food security and resilience of food production systems in Karamoja” (UNJP/UGA/068/EC).
    • Provide technical support in environmental sustainability through agroforestry and sustainable soil management.
  • Reporting Lines:
    • Report to the FAO Representative and the direct supervisor (TBC).
  • Technical Focus:
    • Implement interventions on agroforestry and sustainable soil and water management.
    • Lead planning, implementation, monitoring, evaluation, and capacity building.
  • Tasks and Responsibilities:
    • Plan, implement, and monitor agroforestry and sustainable soil management interventions.
    • Review and implement land use/watershed plans.
    • Establish agroforestry demonstrations and community-managed tree nurseries.
    • Develop capacity of project beneficiaries on raising indigenous tree species.
    • Pilot the global soil doctors programme in Karamoja.
    • Develop and distribute information materials on sustainable soil management.
    • Identify and rehabilitate degraded landscapes.
    • Conduct capacity needs assessments and deliver appropriate training.
    • Propose activities to improve market access for agroforestry products.
    • Document good practices and human-interest stories.
    • Develop monitoring tools and establish a database for project activities.
    • Monitor and provide technical backstopping to implementing partners and beneficiaries.
    • Submit monthly progress briefs and contribute to technical reports.

Qualifications:

  • University Degree in Forestry, Agroforestry, Agroecology, Soil Science, Natural Resources Management, or related fields from a recognized university.
  • Minimum of two years of relevant experience in implementing multi-partner forestry and disaster risk management projects among rural communities, preferably in Karamoja or similar contexts.
  • Knowledge of integrated community-based natural resources management and participatory extension approaches.
  • Working knowledge of English.
  • National of Uganda.

  • Coordination skills for implementing capacity building projects and activities.
  • Leadership skills and openness to innovative approaches.
  • Ability to deliver project outputs and manage budgets timely with high-quality standards.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills within a team and with external stakeholders.
