Job Summary: The Instrumentation and Automation Engineer will ensure proper working of Plant automation hardware and software systems for optimum performance of the Plant, and in compliance with the OH&S regulations.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Maintenance Operations
- Write the Logic diagrams, PLC programs and design CCR graphic displays for new/revamped equipment.
- Responsible for integration of hardware/software modifications and their commissioning.
- Rectify, record and report any control system equipment failure.
- Carry out robust troubleshooting of equipment failures in the Plant
- Perform high quality repair work and communicate findings.
- Ensure all Plant instruments (Weigh feeders, gas analysers, opacimeters, dust monitors, CEMS, fire alarm systems, shell scanners, kiln cameras, VFDs, sensors etc) are maintained and calibrated routinely according to approved schedules.
- Integrate new and revamped instruments into the existing structure, document and commission them.
- Request for purchase of the required Automation spare parts as need arises.
- Ensure timely readiness to efficiently tackle emergencies or urgent breakdowns as programmed with N+1.
Plant Optimization Operations
- Responsible for the revision, testing, and distribution of General Function Specifications (GFSs) for new and revamped systems.
- Ensure the development, review and implementation of Systems Standard Operating procedures (SOPs).
- Challenge and improve existing control loops and diagrams, design new ones in line with process/equipment reliability optimization and user requirements.
- Ensure consistency in information flow between the plant equipment and the control systems. Work with the IT department to ensure proper installation, configuration and operation of plant IT Tools and expert systems. These consist of QMC, High Level Control, and TIS.
- Execute weekly work orders according to equipment preventive maintenance plans and Plant optimization requests as assigned.
- Propose & implement Plant optimization, power consumption and cost reduction initiatives and in extension of electrical life of the plant equipment.
Management – Planning & Cost control
- Responsible for implementation and testing of validated Design Change Requests (DCRs) in collaboration with the users and systematic storage of changes for traceability.
- Responsible for updating software listing, management of passwords, CCR documentation, DCS list of alarms and faults.
- Identify sensitive data & perform planned backups.
- Support the Electrical team leader in the control of the maintenance budget, ensuring planning and follow-up on key tasks & costs through executing effective solutions to achieve budget and to meet or exceed targets while maintaining the Plant control system in healthy running state
Standards
- Perform all duties in compliance with Holcim standards for Plant control systems.
- Supervise control system contractors’ studies and works to ensure Holcim standards are met.
- Take part in the technical training of plant personnel to ensure correct usage of the plant automated systems.
- Comply with regulations, company goals, Rules, local permits, policies and procedures; optimize the internal processes and structures
OH&S and Environment
- Incorporate and ensure individual and team safety culture in all activities.
- Compliance with Group Health, Safety and Environment regulations to ensure zero harm.
- Keep all areas of jurisdiction clean and tidy.
- Attend Health, Safety and Environment trainings organized by the Plant.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The applicant must hold a Degree in Systems/Control/Electronics/Electrical/Instrumentation Engineering or equivalent education / experience.
- At least five years of experience in industrial automation and control systems.
- Experience with PLC programming, DCS and SCADA systems.
- Experience in maintenance and upgrade of control systems
- Experience in busy industrial environment preferred
- Experience applying FMEA techniques and knowledge of basic problem-solving tools.
- Understand cement manufacturing process.
- Microsoft Office, Programming skills (PLC programming, plus languages such as C, VB)
- Strong knowledge of electrical equipment and necessary instrumentation in an automated plant.
- Understand control loops and the control strategy of expert systems and parameterize them as per Holcim operation standards.

- Should be registered with the Engineers Registration Board.
