About ReLAB-HS:

ReLAB-HS is a global activity that supports the development of health systems that are responsive to the growing needs for rehabilitation within populations. Comprised of six international partners with expertise in health systems, implementation science, and delivery innovations, we seek to co-design and implement innovative, comprehensive, cost-effective interventions that strengthen health systems for provision of rehabilitation, including assistive technology. ReLAB-HS focuses on integrating rehabilitation and assistive technology services across all levels of care within health systems.

 

Job Summary:   We are seeking a skilled Communications Officer to lead communications efforts for the USAID-funded Learning, Acting and Building for Rehabilitation (ReLAB-HS) activity in Uganda. ReLAB-HS is implemented by the Johns Hopkins University with partners Humanity & Inclusion, Momentum Wheels for Humanity, Physiopedia, and the University of Melbourne. The five-year activity aims to support the strengthening of health systems that are responsive to growing needs for rehabilitation across the lifespan. ReLAB-HS builds leadership and creates an enabling environment for lasting improvements in the integration of rehabilitation and assistive technology (AT) into health systems.

 

ReLAB-HS is supporting the Ministry of Health of Uganda to strengthen health systems to meet the growing need for rehabilitation and AT in the country. ReLAB-HS would like to the fill the vacant position of the Communications Officer as part of its Uganda country office team. The position is based in Kampala.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:  Under the supervision of the ReLAB-HS Uganda Country Director, the ReLAB-HS Uganda Communications Officer will be responsible for performing the following primary tasks:

  • Collaborate with global team to align Uganda communications with overall project strategy
  • Amplify project milestones and achievements through targeted media outreach and social media campaigns
  • Create engaging multimedia content like press releases, blog posts, graphics, and presentations to promote project work
  • Translate communications materials into local languages to expand reach
  • Ensure brand consistency and adhere to marking guidelines across all platforms
  • Provide communications support for workshops, trainings, and events
  • Gather content and write compelling success stories for quarterly reports
  • Assist with drafting, editing, and proofreading a variety of communications materials
  • Produces content and script for project videos
  • Maintains internal Slack channel with regular activity updates and documentation
  • Perform other communications duties as assigned

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

Required

  • A minimum of bachelor’s degree in public relations, journalism, corporate communications, marketing relations or related field
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience working in media, journalism, advocacy, or communications and marketing, or in closely related external relations contexts
  • Demonstrated experience using a wide range of multimedia, web, and digital tools
  • Outstanding news writing, editing, and social media skills
  • Ability to work well independently and with a team
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Detail-oriented with good organization and prioritization skills
  • Comfortable working under pressure and with multiple competing deadlines
  • Excellent written and spoken fluency in English
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Willingness to travel in country up to 20% of the time

  • Working experience within USAID supported activities or similar donor contexts
  • Good understanding of local/regional languages
  • Photography skills
  • Graphic design skills
  • Video editing skills
