Job Summary: The research assistants will be primarily responsible for conducting and transcribing in-depth interviews and key informant interviews. They will have direct contact with respondents and have a great bearing on the quality of data collected and ultimately on the quality of data output.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Fieldwork preparation duties
- Attend a one-day training workshop for research assistants. Receive data collection tools (questionnaires).
- Conduct piloting of the data collection tools.
- Fieldwork and data collection
- Perform day-to-day data collection activities: seek consent from eligible participants and conduct in-depth interviews and key informant interviews in the field.
- Respond to questions the participants may have about the assessment.
- Share field notes and have brief discussions with the supervisor at the end of each day to discuss any challenges, solutions, and experiences.
- Comply with the requirements necessary for conducting successful interviews using qualitative methods.
- Ensure confidentiality of data collected and study information.
- After field visits
- Ensure that all data captured is always kept secure
- Submit audio records of each interview to the supervisor.
- Submit all participants’ consent forms to the supervisor.
- Write a field report.
- Transcribe the interviews conducted
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The applicant should preferably hold a Bachelor’s degree in social sciences, Nursing, and Midwifery or similar qualification.
- A certificate in Research Ethics will be an added advantage.
- Previous experience with qualitative data collection on maternal, and newborn health, family planning, and immunization with a reputable research organization.
- At least two years of relevant working experience as a health research assistant
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, written and verbal.
- Computer literate
- Ability to produce informative and appropriate written transcriptions.
- Ability to work independently as well as an effective team player.
- Ability to speak native languages in the area (English and Luganda).
