Climate Change Health Advocacy Lead Amref

This position will support the Amref Global advocacy work in climate change and health programming.
The position will contribute to and lead on specific pieces of work at the intersection of climate crises in relations to Amref’s vision of creating lasting health change in Africa. The position is funded by Wellcome
Trust whose mission is to support discovery research into life, health and wellbeing by addressing mental health, infectious disease and climate and health. The position will have the responsibility of actively supporting the integration of Amref’s climate change and health advocacy in its advocacy effort. Further, the position will support Amref’s influencing and thought leadership agenda on climate change and health at regional and global levels.
Broadly, this position will help in positioning the climate resilient health systems work that Amref is implementing through two mutually reinforcing approaches namely:
i. Support the building of the Pan African Multisectoral Partnerships on climate change and health through targeted engagement of governments, private sector and civil societies and other coalitions to form a sustainable network of climate change and health actors in Africa.
Support in translation of climate change and health nexus evidence to policies through engagement of stakeholders at different levels. This should contribute to the overall Amref’s thought leadership and visibility agenda.

Key Responsibilities
Key Area Activities

Strategic Planning
• Lead the development and execution of climate change and health advocacy strategy in consultation with Amref country offices, other HQ units, North America & Europe and the Communications team and external stakeholders including government leaders, NGOs, activists and funders.

Key Area Activities
• Support Amref’s Global Advocacy Lead/Director in the development and implementation of the organisational Advocacy agenda with regard to climate change and health.
Work with Pan African Multisectoral Partnership on climate change and health and other coalitions to broaden understanding of strategic advocacy profiles in climate change and health.
• Support Amref HQ, country and regional teams in the development of implementation strategies to influence governments and private sectors in building of resilient and just health systems.
• Work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, allies, and partners to identify advocacy opportunities, and plan events aligned with Amref’s advocacy priorities in climate change and health.

Partnerships Communication and Networking
• Build relationships with the Pan African Multi-stakeholder partnership on climate change and health, key partners and stakeholders within the civil society / NGO community, parliaments, policy makers, as well as local and international institutions for system change in climate change and health
• Provide secretariat role of the pan African Multi-sectoral partnership on climate change and health.
• Support in the preparation of communication pieces including position papers, statements and, as assigned, represent Amref at meetings, panels, workshops, conferences, and other events.
• In liaison with the communications lead on the development and dissemination of advocacy, communications and outreach materials Planning, Organizing and Reporting
• Support members of Pan African Multi-stakeholder partnership on climate change and health in convening multi-sectoral national-level group of key stakeholders to advance the climate change and health agenda while leveraging on the opportunities at international level in coordination with other Amref HQ units.
Support in the development, implementation and monitoring annual advocacy plans. This includes activity workplans and budgets.
• Collaborate closely with research and advocacy teams to develop research for policy briefs and translate advocacy results into concrete policy briefs/reports for internal and external consumption.

Technical Support
• Provide technical assistance to Pan African Multi-stakeholder partnership on climate change and health members and Amref country office to implement advocacy activities in coordination with other respective country level advocacy managers.
• Provide technical leadership and quality assurance/oversight of the country level advocacy plans on climate change and health.

Resource Mobilization
• Work closely with the business development team to develop proposals Capacity Building
• Develop and execute a training plan, and collaborate with Pan African Multi-stakeholder partnership on climate change and health members to develop advocacy training content, acting as subject matter expert and facilitate delivery and tracking of training.
• Work with civil society actors to strengthen their abilities to communicate effectively on the nexus between climate change and health.

Qualifications, Knowledge And Experience
Education and Knowledge
• Masters’ degree in Public Policy, International Relations, Gender Studies, Health Communications and Advocacy, Political Science, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
• Knowledge of climate mitigation issues and solutions in the agriculture and/or energy/extractives sector is an added advantage.

Experience
• At least seven (7) years of experience working in advocacy and/or public affairs aimed at influencing policy change.
• Demonstrated knowledge of international climate change and development issues related to food/agriculture value chains and/or energy/extractives.
Knowledge of international health and development issues at the global level.
• Experience in policy influencing in Africa.
• Ability to work autonomously combined with experience working remotely and in support of programs abroad.
• Experience developing and managing efforts to influence policymakers, NGOs, and other external stakeholders.
