Cairo Bank Uganda Limited was incorporated on 11th July, 1994. The Bank was formerly known as Cairo International Bank owned by the three leading Egyptian Banks namely; Banque Du Caire, Bank Misr and National Bank of Egypt. In 2019, it became a fully owned subsidiary of Banque Du Caire (BDC). The shareholder consolidation in 2019 was on the back of expanding its presence across Africa whilst providing an entry point into the COMESA market.
Job Summary: The Legal Officer is responsible for ensuring that the bank is pursuing with vigor all avenues open to minimize losses on its lending portfolio and litigation of court
matters.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Proactively provide legal advice to the credit department on all legal matters affecting lending and ensure adherence to the companies Act ,FIA 2004, the
- Mortgage Act, Land Act, Registration of Titles Act and other legislation , including subsidiary legislation in the form of Rules ,Gazette notices, Regulations etc.
- Review of the legal documentation used by the Credit department e.g. letters of offer, facility agreements, debentures and all other security documentation to ensure that the Bank’s interests are well protected.
- Represent the Bank in court/legal related matters (for short and urgent matters e.g. garnishee applications, labor claims etc.) and prepare and submit court notes.
- Proactively review any changes in legislation and submit in the form of legal updates.
- Ensure the application of provisions in statute to credit business operations and environment.
- Conducting research on the bank’s litigation cases and providing periodic updates on the status of cases.
- Providing legal opinions on matters of legal nature.
- Coordinating and preparation of minutes of meetings as assigned by line manager.
- Preparation and submission of weekly, monthly reports on securities perfection status.
- Preparation and submission of weekly, monthly reports on outstanding credit and non – credit cases filed for and against the bank.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The applicant must hold a Bachelor’s of Law degree from a reputable university.
- A Bachelor’s of Laws degree from a reputable university.
- A post graduate diploma in Legal practice.
- Enrolled Advocate
- A minimum of two years of working experience preferably in a financial institution or a busy law firm.
- Strong evaluation, communication and reporting skills.
- Strong service ethics
- Good at managing large volumes of information and can add value through reporting.
- Ability to balance long term and short-term requirements independently.
- Independent and logical thinker yet an achiever and implementer.
