The Medical Research Council (MRC UK) is an internationally recognised centre of excellence with dominant research themes in the areas of HIV and emerging infections, vaccines and immunity, and chronic diseases and cancer. Through a multidisciplinary approach, intersecting basic science, epidemiological research, social-behavioural research and the conduct of new intervention evaluation studies, the Unit contributes knowledge on changing epidemics and diseases, the evaluation of innovative health care options, treatment and prevention and the development of health policy and practice in Africa and worldwide. Following the signing of strategic transfer agreements between the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and the Medical Research Council (MRC UK), the Unit formally joined LSHTM on 1st February 2018. The exciting new partnership will boost research capacity into current and emerging health issues in Africa and throughout the world. The Unit is based at the UVRI Entebbe campus with established outposts in Kalungu, Masaka, Wakiso and Kampala Districts.
Job Summary: The Training Officer will be responsible for providing efficient and effective day today administrative support to the training department, ensuring staff queries are addressed, monitoring and evaluating capacity building initiatives of the Unit.
The post is based in Entebbe although the post holder is expected to make regular visits to the Unit’s other field stations in Uganda which may include overnight stays.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Prepare budgets for planned trainings and submit them to the supervisor for review;
- Make timely MSD requests for supplies and services for the department and follow up with stores and procurement for updates;
- Coordinate training events of the Unit;
- Prepare reports after completion of training events;
- Manage the MSc fellowships of the Unit;
- Communicate to staff available capacity building opportunities;
- Keenly monitor course progression, end dates and ensure that all tuition fees and related expenses are paid with full supporting documents and requisition notes;
- Support preparation of capacity building related reports to Unit Management and other relevant external stakeholders; and,
- Support the monitoring and evaluation of all capacity building efforts in the Unit.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The applicant must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Education, Human Resources management, Social sciences, Industrial Psychology or any related field with a bias in Education or Human resources;
- Professional qualification i.e. training or project management certifications or Post graduate degree is an added advantage;
- Prior experience of working within a multi-cultural and international organization;
- At least three years of experience in a busy research environment or international organization supporting training or capacity building;
- Excellent negotiation and interpersonal skills with the ability to converse comfortably across all levels of the organization;
- Must possess excellent communication skills in written and oral English;
- Knowledge of Ugandan labor laws;
- Excellent planning and reporting skills;
- Excellent presentation skills;
- Excellent oral and written communication skills; and,
- Proficiency using MS Office and an ERP system.
