About US:

Makerere University College of Health Sciences, School of Public Health (MakSPH), and the Guttmacher Institute, Inc, a New York based non-for-profit corporation, are collaborating on a research component of the Global Affairs Canada-funded “Stand Up for Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) project.” The research component aims to generate evidence that contributes to the increased enjoyment of SRHR by a diversity of adolescent girls and young women (AGYW), other women of reproductive age, and men and boys in strategically selected Ugandan and Mozambican districts. In Uganda, the Stand-Up project is being implemented in the eastern districts of Namayingo and Mayuge, and in the refugee settlement districts of Madi-Okollo and Terego. The proposed study will inform ongoing project activities by investigating the barriers and facilitators to access and utilisation of Sexual and Reproductive Health services among vulnerable/marginalized adolescents and young people in project areas.

 

Job Summary:  Based on this background, MakSPH seeks to recruit, experienced, responsible, qualified, and competent qualitative research assistants/ data collectors.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Introduce yourself to the camp commandants in the refugee settlements and the District Health Offices of Mayuge and Namayingo
  • Work with district leadership and community mobilisers such as community health workers to recruit study participants
  • Obtain informed consent from prospective respondents and adhere to the project data management protocols
  • Carry out data collection in accordance with the study protocol
  • Answer questions that the respondents may ask during the course of data collection
  • Participate in data validation to ensure that quality data are collected
  • Transcribe qualitative research interviews and participate in qualitative data analysis
  • Provide daily updates on fieldwork including interviews completed and any other important information on field data collection
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the study coordinator

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The applicant must hold a Bachelor’s degree in a health-related discipline such as Environmental Health, Medicine, Nursing, Public Health OR Social sciences, Anthropology, Demography, and Population studies or humanities.
  • Possession of a Master’s degree will be an added advantage.
  • Must have a certificate of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) or Human Subjects Research
  • Proven experience in working with young and marginalized populations is desirable Should have at least three years of experience in qualitative data collection, analysis, and report writing
  • Proficiency in English and at least one of the local languages (Lusoga, Juba Arabic, Kiswahili, and Lingala is an added advantage
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and problem-solving skills are required
  • Must be willing to work beyond official working hours in the field

 

Terms of service: This is a short-term position not exceeding 2 months
