Uganda Association of women Lawyers (FIDA-Uganda) is a membership-based feminist organization established in 1974 to promote and defend human rights with emphasis on women and children as beneficiaries across the country. FIDA-Uganda’s mission is to advance gender equality through the promotion of women’s and children’s rights and its priority areas include; to promote justice frameworks that are gender responsive; to enhance social justice economic empowerment and inclusion for women; to promote gender justice through strategic partnerships and to enhance the capacity of FIDA-Uganda as a center for legal excellence for women lawyers. It also advocates for policies and practices at the national, regional, and international levels that more effectively protect the rights of women. FIDA-Uganda operates nationwide with a Secretariat in Kampala and other satellite districts across the country.

 

Job Summary:  The Legal Officer is responsible to oversee the overall implementation of all project activities in the designated district. Specifically, ensuring client’s support needs are identified and addressed with a gender lens through direct support (litigation, ADR, follow up) or referrals; create and strengthen strategic partnerships to advance FIDA-Uganda’s work within the districts of operation; Negotiate, draft or review contracts and agreements on behalf of the organization; Monitor and record strategic interventions; develop periodic reports, among others.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The applicant must hold an Honors Degree in Law from a recognized University
  • Post graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the Law Development Centre (or in progress)
  • Negotiation, mediation, conciliation and arbitration skills
  • Excellent research, analytical, writing and presentation skills
  • Proven ability to engage constructively with district officials, Government, Civil Society and other sectors and others.
