Job Summary: The main purpose of this role is to ensure the smooth day-to-day running of the library services at the AKU School of Nursing and Midwifery (SONAM). The Assistant Librarian will be responsible for coordinating the acquisition, organisation, dissemination, and exploitation of information resources appropriate to the faculty, students, and staff of AKU. The Librarian will be required to manage the library services and supervise staff for effective library service delivery.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collection development and Management: select and acquire information resources needed to support the University’s core business in both print and electronic format Oversee the removal of outdated information. Plan to supervise the annual stock-taking
  • Managed the subscribed online databases to ensure standardization access to online resources
  • Coordinate cataloging and classification of information in the library with a focus on increasing the use of resources Develop library guides to support teaching, learning, and research Coordinate the implementation of the Institutional Repository at SONAM Library
  • Manage implementation of off-campus access to resources
  • Develop and implement an information literacy curriculum, by orienting new library users, students, and faculty,
  • Delver training to library users to increase their ability to locate, evaluate and effectively use the information
  • Ensure library policy regulations and procedures are adhered to.
  • Properly manage and maintain the library budget

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The ideal applicant must hold a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science or related discipline.
  • At least five years of work experience in an academic library
  • Proficiency in ICT
  • Sound knowledge of library management systems and a range of library procedures
  • Managing electronic resources such as journal subscriptions
  • Familiarity with National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) guidelines and regulations for university libraries
  • Knowledge and skills in supporting research in Evidence-Based Practice and Systematic reviews
