About US:

PEAS (Promoting Equality in African Schools) is social enterprise with a mission to ‘expand access to sustainably delivered, quality secondary education across Africa’. PEAS establishes and operates affordable secondary schools in Uganda and Zambia in areas where access to quality secondary education is limited due to cost and geographical barriers. PEAS launched an ambitious strategy in 2021, aimed at expanding Access to Quality education, ensure schools are Sustainable and invest in systems strengthening. With over 30 secondary schools in Uganda educating over 13,500 students, 40 staff at the Country Office and 900 staff working in the network schools, PEAS intends to recruit for various positions across the network as follows:

 

Job Summary: The Head Teacher will provide effective, dynamic, and inspirational leadership in order to enable PEAS school to fulfill its agreed Education outcomes

 

As a PEAS Head teacher, you will provide strategic leadership and professional management for the school. To secure the success and drive improvements in your PEAS school; you will ensure high quality education and personalized learning is delivered for all its students and drive high standards and achievement in all areas of the school’s work.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Outreach

  • Works with the director to develop and execute outreach plans to increase student enrolment and student populations in PEAS school.
  • Works closely  with  the  Director,  Regional  Programme  Manager,  and  the  Community
  • Engagement Officer to develop public relations plan and school advertising plan.
  • Develops and  implements  strategies  to  promote  PEAS  School’s  mission  to  both  the internal constituencies of the school and the community at large.
  • Education Management
  • To drive high performance expectations for PEAS students and for teachers to be effective and innovative.
  • Promote an  atmosphere  of  caring  and  trust  among  PEAS  staff,  setting  the  tone  for respectful interaction with students, and demonstrating a willingness to change practices in the light of new understandings.
  • Works with the director to establishing a school structure that promotes participative decision making, supporting delegation and distributive leadership, and encouraging teacher decision making autonomy.
  • Working towards whole-staff consensus on school priorities and communicating these to students and staff to establish a strong sense of overall purpose.

Education Management

  • Encouraging staff to reflect on what they are trying to achieve with students and how they are doing it.
  • Facilitates opportunities for staff to learn from each other and models continual learning
  • in his or her own practice.
  • Assumes responsibility for all Education Targets and SIP reports to the Director.
  • Performance management and assessment of teaching staff. Complete all necessary PEAS schools performance evaluation processes.
  • Oversee regular lesson observations of teaching staff.
  • Lead the development and implementation of annual and termly education development strategies.
  • Organize a head of department meeting at least 3 times a term including overseeing the provision of career guidance and the welfare and professional development of staff members.
  • Take responsibility for induction programme for new staff members.
  • Act as primary point of contact for MoES, UNEB and in conjunction with the Director, work with the Board of Governors and PTA for the best interests of the students.

Leadership

  • Develops and maintains active and productive relationships with PEAS National Office, Board members (BOG), PTA and School Administration.
  • Leading teachers of PEAS school towards the achievement of commonly agreed goals and performance targets.
  • Ensuring that PEAS schools are in compliance with all applicable government regulations
  • Working together with the Senior School Support Officer and other PEAS staff to develop and implement systems of checks and balances to measure Operational efficiency.

Finance Management

  • Jointly accountable for school budget and expenditure budget with the Director.
  • Co-signs all school accounts together with the Director.
  • Accountable for all school management financial USE reports and data as specified from time to time by the Director
  • Collates and prioritizes departmental resource requirements and to work with the school Director to requisition and procure necessary materials cost-effectively from reputable suppliers.

Governance

  • Works with the PEAS National office, Board of Governor, Parents – Teachers Association and the Director to develop strategies to initiate and meet aggressive school goals.
  • Assumes responsibility for all development reports to the Director and other agencies
  • and attends all Board meetings as the secretary.
  • Assists the  Director  with  recommending  and  researching  potential  new  members teaching and non-teaching staff.

Contribute to the Network

  • Establishes new links with external partners, and build upon existing relationships, in order to promote PEAS schools model experience.
  • Participates in the induction and orientation of new members in the PEAS ethos and culture.
  • Provision of early leadership experiences for school management teams. Takes initiative
  • to share learnings and good practices with new PEAS school management teams

Qualifications and Experience

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Education from a recognized University / Institution
  • Registered as a Graduate Teacher with the Ministry of Education and Sports.
  • A minimum of (5) years teaching experience in a Secondary School, five (5) of which should
  • be at the level of a substantive Deputy Head Teacher or any Leadership role.
