Background

The Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) is implementing “The Green Lung of Uganda III” holistic reforestation project between Budongo and Bugoma Forest Reserves, western Uganda. This three-year project proposes to build on the gaps, challenges, and successes of the predecessor Green Lung II      Holistic Reforestation Project targeting private and communal tropical natural forests that form important wildlife corridors between the Budongo and Bugoma Central Forest Reserves in the Kikuube, Hoima and Masindi Districts of Western Uganda. The Budongo – Bugoma Corridor (BBC) forests are a critical water catchment system for the sub-region and are also one of Africa’s richest biodiversity hotspots. Enhancing the resilience of forest adjacent communities and protecting ecosystems through community-led adaptation interventions focusing on riparian forest afforestation, natural regeneration, and facilitating sustainable livelihood diversification was the focus of the Green Lung II project approach. However, based on lessons learned and gaps identified, in this third phase JGI is continuing to emphasize the achievement of sustainable and holistic development outcomes through an approach to natural resources management and focused conservation education that emphasizes gender equality in natural resources management.

In this activity under intermediate result (“IR 4: Support area residents to improve farming practices and diversify livelihood sources”), JGI aims to support communities within the BBC corridors to improve, develop and enhance income generating activities to improve community livelihoods. The Jane Goodall Institute, which works and supports private forest owners in the BBC corridors of Hoima and Kikuube has for long supported forest owners with various income generation projects to reduce dependence on the chimpanzee habitats and create community incentives to support chimpanzee conservation. Beekeeping is one of the most prominent enterprises promoted by NGOs and the local governments overlapping the Albertine rift region of Uganda. These efforts, however, have faced several challenges to the effect that beehives are sometimes abandoned or burned by the wildfires. Further, communities have complained of low bee colonization rates, honey theft and low returns on investment from the enterprise. On the other hand, beekeeping remains a highly favored, wildlife-friendly enterprise among bee experts and NGOs owing to the value and importance attached to its products. Due to the low upfront costs associated with beekeeping, communities are eager to adopt this enterprise.
